Mohair Fabric by the Yard

Mohair is one of the most luxurious natural textile fibres available for residential upholstery — produced from the fleece of the Angora goat and prized for its exceptional lustre, silky softness, and depth of colour that surpasses almost any other woven fabric. Mohair velvet, the most common residential application, combines the natural lustre of mohair fibre with the pile construction of velvet to create a surface that catches and reflects light with extraordinary richness. At The WorkRoom, our mohair fabric collection is sourced from leading luxury fabric brands, sold by the yard with samples available.

What Makes Mohair Special

Mohair fibre has a smooth, cylindrical structure that reflects light uniformly — producing a lustre and sheen that wool, cotton, and synthetic fibres cannot replicate. This quality is most visible in mohair velvet, where the pile directionality creates a characteristic shimmer that shifts from light to dark as the viewing angle changes. Unlike synthetic velvets that achieve a similar optical effect through polyester pile, mohair velvet develops character and patina with use — the pile subtly crushes and recovers, recording the history of the piece in a way that adds rather than detracts from its beauty. Mohair is also naturally flame-resistant, making it suitable for both residential and select commercial upholstery applications.

Mohair Fabric for Upholstery

Mohair's weight, pile density, and natural resilience make it almost exclusively an upholstery fabric — used on sofas, armchairs, headboards, ottomans, and benches where its extraordinary surface character can be fully appreciated at close range and touch. It is particularly well suited to formal living rooms, master bedrooms, and any space where tactile luxury and visual depth are design priorities. For pieces that receive heavy daily use, the pile should be considered — mohair velvet can show seating impressions on cushions more readily than flat-woven alternatives, though the pile generally recovers with light brushing.

Mohair in an Interior

Mohair velvet has deep roots in European maximalist and Hollywood Regency interior traditions — the fabric of choice for the most glamorous, light-filled rooms of the 20th century. A mohair sofa or pair of chairs in a jewel tone — sapphire, emerald, ruby, or deep aubergine — remains one of the most definitively luxurious statements in residential design. Mohair layers naturally with velvet fabric in complementary tones, with silk fabric for cushions and accent pieces, and with linen fabric on larger neutral pieces that provide contrast without competition.

Velvet fabric is the most closely related category — offering similar pile depth and visual richness across a wider range of fibre compositions and price points. Silk fabric shares mohair's natural lustre and luxury positioning for the most formal applications. Wool fabric uses the broader Angora and wool family in woven rather than pile constructions.
