Chenille Fabric by the Yard

Chenille is one of the most tactilely distinctive fabric constructions available for residential upholstery — a pile fabric produced by twisting short lengths of yarn around a core thread to create a soft, velvety surface with a characteristic lustre and depth that shifts with the angle of light. The word comes from the French for "caterpillar," a reference to the fuzzy, textured pile that gives chenille its uniquely soft hand. At The WorkRoom, our chenille fabric collection spans solids, stripes, woven patterns, and jacquard designs from leading brands including Lee Jofa and Stout Textiles, sold by the yard with samples available before committing to a full order.

What Makes Chenille Fabric Special

Chenille's defining characteristic is its pile construction — a three-dimensional surface that catches light differently depending on which direction the pile is brushed, creating a subtle sheen and depth that flat-woven or printed fabrics cannot replicate. This directional quality means chenille upholstery can appear to shift between lighter and darker tones as you move around a piece of furniture — a visual richness that is particularly valuable on large upholstered surfaces like sofas and sectionals. Chenille is also exceptionally soft to the touch, making it a natural choice for seating where comfort and tactile quality matter as much as visual appeal. Compared to velvet, chenille has a more casual, relaxed character — similar pile softness with less formal sheen and greater durability for everyday upholstery use.

Chenille Constructions in This Collection

Patterned chenille weaves — such as the Lee Jofa Modern Mercer Weave from the SOHO collection (cotton/viscose/linen blend, 55.9" wide, India) — bring the richness of chenille pile to structured woven patterns with vertical repeats. The cotton-dominant blend provides excellent durability alongside the characteristic softness of the viscose pile component, making it well suited to formal upholstery applications. Solid-ground chenille — such as Lee Jofa Modern Clinton Weave (viscose/cotton/polyester, Turkey, 54" wide, no repeat) — delivers the full chenille pile effect in a clean, no-repeat format ideal for large upholstered pieces where a seamless, uninterrupted surface is the priority. Multipurpose chenille from Stout Textiles — including stripes, plaids, and solid constructions in polyester-dominant blends — combines the chenille surface with practical durability and performance characteristics including Wyzenbeek double-rub testing, making these fabrics suitable for both upholstery and drapery applications in active households.

Chenille Fabric for Upholstery

Chenille is almost exclusively an upholstery fabric — its pile construction, weight, and surface character make it most appropriate for sofas, armchairs, sectionals, ottomans, headboards, and dining chairs where the tactile quality can be fully appreciated at contact. The pile direction should be considered when upholstering — running the pile downward on seat cushions and upward on back cushions creates the most consistent visual appearance and the most durable wear pattern. For heavily used pieces, polyester-blend chenille from Stout offers greater abrasion resistance than natural-fibre constructions; for formal or less-trafficked pieces, the cotton/viscose blends from Lee Jofa Modern provide the most refined hand and visual depth.

How Chenille Layers in an Interior

Chenille's warm, soft character suits traditional, transitional, and relaxed contemporary interiors equally well. A chenille sofa in a warm neutral alongside linen fabric on accent chairs creates a layered, tactile room with quiet material contrast. Patterned chenille weaves in jewel tones pair naturally with botanical and floral fabric on cushions — the textural richness of the chenille ground complements the graphic quality of printed pattern. Velvet fabric is the closest neighbour to chenille in the pile-fabric family and layers beautifully in accent pieces alongside a chenille sofa or headboard.

Also Explore

Velvet fabric is the most closely related pile construction — slightly more formal and lustrous than chenille, equally tactile and warm. Boucle fabric is another textural upholstery construction with a similarly relaxed, soft character in a looped rather than pile surface. Textured and woven fabric extends the broader world of tactile, three-dimensional upholstery constructions beyond pile fabrics into weaves, jacquards, and basketweaves.
