Embroidery & Crewel Fabrics by the Yard

Embroidery and crewel fabric covers residential textiles where decorative thread stitching creates pattern, texture, and dimensional visual interest on a woven fabric ground — from delicate machine embroidery on sheer and linen grounds through elaborate hand-worked crewel embroidery in wool on linen or cotton. At The WorkRoom, our embroidery and crewel fabric collection spans designs from leading luxury brands including Schumacher, Lee Jofa, and others.

Crewel Embroidery

Crewel embroidery is the most historically significant form of domestic textile embroidery in the English decorative tradition — wool thread worked in a variety of stitches on a linen or cotton ground to create botanical, animal, and scenic compositions of extraordinary richness and vitality. Traditional crewelwork draws from the Indian and English needlework traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries, producing fabrics with an organic warmth and handmade character that no machine-produced textile can replicate. Modern crewel fabric uses both hand and machine embroidery to achieve the characteristic richly textured botanical patterns at commercially viable scales.

Machine Embroidery Fabric

Machine-embroidered fabric uses computerised embroidery equipment to produce decorative thread patterns on woven grounds at greater speed and consistency than hand embroidery — making embroidered fabric accessible at residential price points while maintaining the tactile quality and visual interest of thread-work decoration. Machine embroidery appears on sheer grounds (where the embroidery is the primary design element), on linen and cotton grounds (for decorative pattern), and on velvet grounds (for richly dimensional surface pattern).
