Velvet Fabric by the Yard

Velvet is the most inherently luxurious woven fabric construction available for residential upholstery — a pile-woven textile whose densely packed cut loops create a surface of extraordinary tactile softness, visual depth, and light-responsive colour that no other fabric category can fully replicate. At The WorkRoom, our velvet fabric collection spans cotton, mohair, silk, linen, and performance velvet constructions from the world's leading luxury brands — sold by the yard with samples available.

How Velvet Works

Velvet's characteristic lustre and depth result from the directionality of its pile — short loops of fibre that all stand in the same direction, creating a surface that reflects light differently depending on which angle it is viewed from. This is most visible in the characteristic colour shift of velvet: darker from one direction, lighter from another, creating a living, breathing quality that smooth-woven fabrics cannot achieve. The pile direction also creates the distinctive "tracking" quality that makes velvet show the impression of touch and pressure — a quality that some find desirable (as evidence of use and life) and others prefer to manage with regular brushing.

Types of Velvet

Cotton velvet is the most practical and widely-used — durable, cleanable, and available across the widest colour range. Mohair velvet has the greatest lustre and most extraordinary depth of colour due to mohair fibre's natural light-reflective qualities. Silk velvet is the most formally elegant and the most delicate. Linen velvet has a slightly flatter pile with natural warmth and organic character. Performance velvet combines pile construction with stain-resistant engineering for active households.
