Why Wool for Residential Upholstery

Wool's natural properties make it exceptionally well-suited to residential upholstery. Its inherent flame resistance meets fire safety standards without chemical treatment. Its natural crimp and elasticity allow wool fabric to recover from compression — preventing the permanent indentations that plagued cotton and synthetic upholstery. Wool's moisture-wicking properties regulate temperature naturally, making wool-upholstered pieces comfortable in both warm and cool conditions. Wool also naturally repels soil at the surface level (hydrophobic exterior fibre) before allowing moisture absorption, giving it practical soil-resistance properties without the need for chemical stain treatment.

Types of Wool Fabric

Woven wool covers the broadest category: tweeds, herringbones, plaids, and textured wovens that bring the warmth and texture of traditional wool into residential upholstery and drapery. Wool bouclé and loop pile is the most tactile wool construction — the irregular, textured loops of bouclé yarn creating a surface of organic warmth and dimensional visual interest. Wool felt creates a smooth, flat, non-woven surface with the warmth of wool without the pattern of weave.
