Stout Spotlight: Molly Torres Portnof’s Pattern-Drenched Brooklyn Heights Apartment

Historic Brooklyn charm meets playful, pattern-filled design in this captivating apartment by Molly Torres Portnof, principal designer and founder of DATE Interiors. Located on a picturesque, tree-lined street near the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, the residence inspired a thoughtful transformation celebrating both its century-old history and its owner’s personality.

Using a curated selection of Stout fabrics, Molly introduced rich color, traditional motifs and luxurious texture throughout the home. The result feels collected and sophisticated while remaining warm, feminine and delightfully unexpected.

Restoring the Character of a Brooklyn Heights Apartment

The apartment’s location provided the starting point for the design.

“It really does feel like walking onto a Nora Ephron movie set,” Molly explains. Inspired by the romantic streets and historic brownstones of Brooklyn Heights, she wanted to capture some of that unmistakable charm inside the home.

Her goal was to return the apartment to its former glory while honoring its beautiful architectural bones and more than 100 years of history. Previous renovations had removed many of its original details, including plaster ceiling medallions and a marble fireplace mantel. Restoring traditional character therefore became an essential part of the project.

At the same time, Molly wanted the interior to feel fun, feminine and eclectic—not like a period restoration. The apartment’s quintessential bay window, a hallmark of Brooklyn brownstone architecture, served as a guiding feature.

“I wanted to design a home worthy of that iconic, grand bay window,” she says.

Creating Continuity With Kango 1 Navy

To connect the living room and kitchen, Molly selected Kango 1 Navy, a deep blue toile from Stout Textiles.

The pattern appears on the living room Roman shades, a bench cushion and the kitchen cabinet-door panels. Repeating the same fabric throughout adjoining areas creates a visual thread between the spaces while allowing the distinctive toile design to become one of the apartment’s signatures.

Blue-and-white toile is a natural choice for a historic interior, but its unexpected application on cabinetry gives the traditional motif a fresh, personalized character.

Softening the Windows With Breed 1 Snow

For the café curtains, Molly chose Breed 1 Snow, a light sheer fabric with a subtle stripe.

The material offers privacy without blocking the apartment’s natural light. Its understated pattern also provides a quiet counterpoint to the bolder textiles used elsewhere in the room.

Adding Depth With William Morris-Inspired Velvets

Decorative pillows introduce layers of comfort, pattern and saturated color.

The square pillows feature Acorn Velvet 2 Ink, while the lumbar pillows are made with Marigold Velvet 1 Merlot. Molly was drawn to the classical yet understated quality of these William Morris-inspired patterned velvets.

Their intricate botanical motifs complement the apartment’s historic setting, while the plush velvet adds warmth and dimension. Deep ink blue and merlot also help ground the lighter elements within the room.

A Dramatic Velvet Shower Curtain

One of the home’s most memorable moments appears in the bathroom, where Molly used Beechwood 29 Merlot to create a theatrical shower curtain.

“This was a special ‘wow’ moment that required a special fabric,” she explains. “The goal was to create the feeling of a grand stage in the bathroom, with the shower curtain harkening back to a stage curtain.”

The rich velvet delivers exactly that effect. Its color, weight and elegant drape transform a practical feature into a dramatic focal point.

Embracing Pattern-Drenched Interiors

Molly is an enthusiastic supporter of pattern drenching—the practice of enveloping a room in coordinating wallpaper, fabric and decorative motifs.

“I love pattern drenching a room with beautiful wallpaper and fabric,” she says.

Patterns such as Scallop Floral 1 Blossom and Beechwood 29 Merlot demonstrate how floral designs and sumptuous textures can work together to create a layered interior. Instead of limiting a statement pattern to a single accent, repeating and coordinating patterns allows the entire room to feel immersive and intentional.

Molly’s Dream Design Project

When asked about her dream commission, Molly turns to an iconic source of Upper East Side inspiration: Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl.

She imagines designing an over-the-top Manhattan residence filled with unapologetic color and pattern. Fabrics such as Swanky 1 Rosewood and Remember 2 Bone would be ideal for creating the polished, dramatic and personality-driven rooms worthy of the fictional style icon.

The concept perfectly reflects Molly’s love of interiors that are sophisticated without becoming predictable.

Molly’s design mantra is simple but meaningful:

“The biggest compliment any client can give me is to say, ‘This feels like me.’”

Rather than imposing a single signature look on every project, she creates spaces that reflect each client’s personality, lifestyle and individual tastes.
