Celerie Kemble Fabric by the Yard

Celerie Kemble is one of the most celebrated and characterful interior designers working in America today — a principal of Kemble Interiors, the Palm Beach design firm founded by her mother Mimi McMakin, and a New York office director whose interiors have appeared in virtually every major shelter publication. Her design philosophy — making homes genuinely livable by putting the person in the place — translates directly into her fabric collection for Schumacher: patterns that are bold enough to define a room but considered enough to actually live with. At The WorkRoom, we carry the complete Celerie Kemble fabric collection as an authorised Schumacher dealer, with samples available before committing to a full order.

About Celerie Kemble

Celerie Kemble studied at Harvard before following what she describes as a compulsion for design into interior work at Kemble Interiors, where she founded and leads the New York office. Over more than fifteen years she has built a portfolio of highly publicised residential and commercial interiors known for their wit, warmth, and refusal to take design too seriously — interiors that feel inhabited by real people with genuine personality. Two monographs published by Clarkson Potter — Celerie Kemble: To Your Taste (2008) and Black and White: And a Bit in Between (2011) — established her as both a designer and a design thinker. Her collaboration with Schumacher reflects the full range of her aesthetic: from dramatic large-scale prints and hand-crafted silhouettes to versatile geometric patterns and luxurious wovens.

Signature Patterns

Hothouse Flowers is among the most iconic Celerie Kemble designs — a dramatic, hand-printed tree of life motif with overscale flowering vines at a generous 50.375" repeat. The silhouette version in peacock and other colourways is one of the most recognised and sought-after Schumacher fabric designs, equally at home as drapery, upholstery on a statement chair, or accent cushions. Its scale and hand-printed character make it one of the most genuinely distinctive fabrics in the entire Schumacher collection. Betwixt is a geometric bestseller that demonstrates Kemble's range — a structured, graphic pattern that works in the most modern and traditional interiors alike, available in multiple colourways. Conundrum is another perennial bestseller from the collection — a versatile multipurpose pattern that reflects Kemble's ability to create fabrics with broad appeal across design styles. Borneo Silk in brown brings the collection's most luxurious construction — a rich silk fabric suited to the most formal upholstery and drapery applications.

Celerie Kemble for Upholstery and Drapery

The collection spans both upholstery and drapery applications with genuine depth. For upholstery, the graphic and geometric patterns — Betwixt, Conundrum — suit accent chairs, headboards, and decorative cushions where the pattern can anchor a piece without overwhelming a room. Hothouse Flowers is at its most dramatic as full-length drapery panels — the overscale print reads magnificently at window height in a generous repeat. Borneo Silk is most appropriate for formal drapery and decorative cushion applications where its silk construction can be protected from heavy wear. The collection also includes trim — the Acanthus Tape provides a coordinating passementerie finishing option designed to complement Kemble's fabric designs.

How Celerie Kemble Fabric Layers in an Interior

Kemble's fabrics are built for layering — her interiors are known for mixing pattern at multiple scales with confidence and humour. A Hothouse Flowers statement chair alongside neutral linen upholstery on a sofa creates the classic Kemble contrast of bold and quiet. Velvet fabric in a deep complementary tone — peacock, forest, or aubergine — sits beautifully alongside the hand-printed Kemble silhouette designs. Stripe fabric in a complementary colourway is a classic pairing with the Kemble geometric patterns — disciplined geometry alongside expressive print. For coordinating wall treatments, the companion Celerie Kemble wallpaper collection through Schumacher features Feather Bloom, Hothouse Flowers Silhouette, and other designs that complete the picture.
